Garden warbler

Sylvia borin

Interesting facts: Contrary to what the name implies, the garden warbler is more likely to be found at the edge of woods and copses than in our gardens. The bird is very shy, and you are more likely to hear it than see it. Its song is melodic and patters along in seemingly endless choruses. As a migratory bird, the species returns from Africa very late, at the end of April. During the breeding season, the species feeds on spiders, insects and caterpillars. In summer, fruit is mainly on the menu.

Characteristics: Upper-side of the plumage is an inconspicuous light grey to brown; round end of the tail; short, dark beak

Body length: Less than 20 cm (sparrow length)

Distribution: High, thick shrubs at the edge of forests, copses, parks with dense undergrowth
