Collared flycatcher

Ficedula albicollis

Interesting facts: The behaviour of the collared flycatcher is very similar to the closely related pied flycatcher. Just like this one, it hunts flying insects from a perch, mostly in the crown area of trees. It nests in tree hollows or nesting boxes.

Characteristics: Plumage similar to pied flycatcher, male black and white contrasted mating colours with clearly distinguished white neckband, in summer plumage as with the female brown top

Body length: Less than 20 cm (smaller than a blackbird)

Distribution: Preferably sparse deciduous forests with old trees, cemeteries and parks; overwinters in Africa
