Common raven

Corvus corax

Interesting facts: With a wing span of up to 1.20 m and a weight of up to 1.5 kg, the common raven is the largest corvid in Europe. It has a wide repertoire of vocals. Some sounds are like belching, grunting or creaking. The intelligent bird can also imitate dog barks and the mating call of the capercaillie. The common raven likes to play together with its own kind; you can see it rolling down and sledging in the snow and on sand dunes on hillsides. Like many other corvids, it is omnivorous.

Characteristics: Unmistakable due to its size and the powerful black beak; plumage predominantly black; tail wedge-shaped at the end; legs and toes dark grey to black

Body length: Longer than 30 cm (longer than a blackbird)

Distribution: Low and high mountain ranges, extensive, undisturbed forested areas, partly also at the coast
