Firecrest

Interesting facts: The firecrest and the goldcrest are among the smallest birds in Europe. It lives in coniferous and mixed forests. The bird secures the cup-shaped nest high up in conifers, hidden on the underside of a branch. It is made up of needles, lichen and moss. Animal fur, feathers and spider webs line the interior of the nest. The little birds are already sexually mature at seven to nine months of age. The life expectancy is only around two to three years.

Characteristics: Crown bordered with black, shiny orange-coloured crest; plumage predominantly greenish-yellow, underside whitish-grey

Body length: Around 10 cm (smaller than a sparrow)

Habitat: Coniferous and mixed forests, parks and large gardens with a lot of trees
