Robin

Erithacus rubecula

Interesting facts: In winter if you hear high-pitched choruses coming from the bush, it is probably a robin. It is at home in forests with plenty of cover or gardens with trees and a lot of shrubs. It needs hiding places close to the ground for its cup-shaped nest. This can be dense vegetation, a hole in a wall or a hollow tree stump. Its food consists of insects, worms and spiders, which the bird usually looks for while hopping on the ground. But berries are also on the menu.

Characteristics: Face to breast orange-red, upperside of the plumage olive-brown, grey-brown tail, whitish underside; large, black eyes; thin, pointed beak

Body length: Less than 20 cm (sparrow length)

Distribution: Forests with plenty of undergrowth, copses, hedges, parks, gardens, also in city centres
