Short-toed treecreeper

Certhia brachydactyla

Interesting facts: The short-toed treecreeper is a breeding bird found throughout Central Europe. It climbs tree trunks, spiralling upwards. In doing so, it picks insects and spiders out of grooves in the bark using it thin, curved beak. With its mousey grey-brown patterning it is so well camouflaged that hardly anyone recognises it. Therefore, the bird is at home anywhere where there are trees with cracked bark.

Characteristics: The upper side is predominantly brown-grey with black stripes; underside is predominantly light, white abdomen; long, curved, pointed beak; long, stiff tail feathers, tail forked at the end

Body length: Less than 20 cm (sparrow length)

Distribution: Sparse deciduous and mixed forests, parks and gardens with a lot of trees
